About Dr. Yan Lu

Dr. Yan LuDr. Yan Lu, D.A.O.M., L.Ac. is one of the first U.S. accredited Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and Licensed Acupuncturist. While most licensed acupuncturists have a masters degree, Dr Lu is one of the few acupuncturist who also has earned his doctoral degree. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Medicine from Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the People’s Republic of China. This degree licensed him as a doctor of both western medicine (in China) and traditional Chinese medicine. He earned his doctoral degree of acupuncture and oriental medicine from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, specializing in Gynecology and Pain Management.

From 1990 to 1996, Dr. Lu was on staff at the Heilongjiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China, where he was involved in treating patients, teaching and research. He specialized in diagnosing and treating neuromuscular and skeletal pain and stroke with acupuncture, herbs and tuina (Chinese medical massage).

Since 1997, Dr. Lu has taught acupuncture, tuina and herbal medicine at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in Portland, Oregon. He has trained many acupuncturists through these years and is proud to see over half of them helping people in Oregon and Washington with acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

Dr. Lu established his acupuncture and massage clinic in Portland, Oregon after he came to the United States. In two decades of practicing the Chinese healing arts, both in China and the U.S., Dr. Lu has helped thousands of people with a wide variety of physical and psychological illness and conditions, through his comprehensive healing therapy incorporating acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and tuina. Dr. Lu also sees patients in Evergreen Medical Clinic in Vancouver WA, where his patients enjoy the care from both western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine.

Dr. Lu authored the book Tuina: A Handbook for Students and Practitioners. This book is currently being used as a textbook by several acupuncture schools in the U.S. In this book, he combines what he learned in China with his practical experience in the United States to create tuina protocols that are unique to his practice.

Dr. Lu was also a traditional Chinese medicine research practitioner on “ Alternative Medicine Approaches for People with Temporomandibular disorder (TMD)” from 2000 to 2002 and from 2006 to 2008. For this study, he treated people with TMD pain using acupuncture tuina massage, and Chinese herbs at his clinics in Portland and Vancouver. This research was funded by a grant from National Health Institute.

Dr. Lu is also guest lecturer at OHSU, Adventist Hospital and Kaiser Permenante, in which he has lectured to medical staff and patients. He was also invited to give a lecture to acupuncturists in Alaska.
